Types of Canadian Work Permits
Canada offers two main types of work permits for foreign workers:
1️⃣ Open Work Permit
An Open Work Permit allows foreign nationals to work for any employer in Canada, without being tied to a specific job or meeting employer-specific requirements.
Who Can Apply for an Open Work Permit?
International Students – Eligible graduates from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) can apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP).
Permanent Residence (PR) Applicants – Individuals applying for PR can qualify for an open work permit while waiting for their application decision.
Temporary Resident Permit Holders – Those holding a valid Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) may be eligible.
Spouses or Common-Law Partners – Spousal Open Work Permits (SOWP) are available to partners of skilled workers or international students in Canada.
🔹 Processing Time: Open Work Permits typically take around 38 weeks to process.
2️⃣ Employer-Specific Work Permit (Closed Work Permit)
A Closed Work Permit is job-specific and allows a foreign worker to be employed only by the designated employer mentioned on the permit.
Requirements for a Closed Work Permit
A valid job offer from a Canadian employer.
A Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA), proving that no Canadian worker is available for the position.
Compliance with all employer-specific terms regarding wages, working conditions, and job role.
Required Documents for a Canada Work Permit Application
To apply for a Canada work permit, you must provide the following essential documents:
1️⃣ Personal Identification & Travel Documents
Valid Passport – Must be valid for the duration of your stay.
Digital Photograph – Must meet Canadian visa photo requirements.
2️⃣ Supporting Documents
Employment or Study Permit Approval – If applicable, proof of visa approval.
Proof of Address – A document verifying your current residence.

In most cases, applicants must submit a Police Clearance Certificate as part of their application.
Processing time for this document can take up to 8 weeks.
